So yesterday was Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday. A holiday celebrated around the world, unfortunately most of us think it’s just a place to trade beads to look at coeds tits…. Fat Tuesday also known as Shrove Tuesday means to confess. Fat Tuesday is celebrated Carnival style as you are supposed to prepare for repenting as Ash Wednesday is the very next day. Large parties filled with decadent food and drink, all topped off by eating the King Cake. A sweet, buttery cake elegantly decorated with a small baby inside…..you heard me. The guest that finds the baby is supposed to make the cake next year.
Ash Wednesday is the start of the fasting period of lent. Many Christians give up something during lent to represent Jesus fasting in the desert for forty days. Many will go wild at Mardi Gras knowing the next day they will need to give up what they have been doing. Ash Wednesday is marked by many followers that will go to church for service or a prayer and have ashes placed on their foreheads by the pastor.
My mom will always ask me what I am giving up for lent even though we are not Catholic.
Several years ago I had decided to give up smoking, the problem is my parents did know I smoked…..So when she asked, I said I gave up meat! Damn it, I done lied my way in to be a vegetarian…..that can’t be good. This was a pretty rough Lenten period as I’m sure I was a real dick to people around me. I pushed through and never broke it, I remember when it was over getting a baconator from Wendy’s and a pack of Marlboros. In retrospect that last part represents a good chunk of some of my health issues throughout life. Luckily I rarely ever eat fast food and I haven’t had a cigarette in many years. Just trying to be better each day.
I guess for many of you nonbelievers, it’s just Valentine’s Day for you? So just in case nobody says it to you, Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day is not actually just the Hallmark holiday that we believe it is and actually has differing celebrations around the world. Way too much for me to type out, so I made it easier and linked wiki. I know that for my single life, that it was a day to eat chocolates that I gave to myself…..I mean if I did that, don’t judge me! I can remember as a kid sitting in grade school making little cards for the girls I hoped felt the same way.
I was no Ralph Wiggum, but I certainly was no Fabio either. As you get older you wonder how important these “holidays” are. I know that my fiance and I are both working long hours today, but I also want her to know how much she means to me, of course then again I try to do that each day. Maybe I will just play my favorite song about romance for her.
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, for me
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me
” – Sam Cooke
Your Valentine, xoxo
